Hugo is organizing Olympiad students to teach Mathematics and English for children in orphanages.
Hugo and his parents have been visiting orphanages to celebrate his birthday since he was a child. Over the years, he learned that the children in those orphanages perceived Mathematics as a difficult subject, hence they shunned away from it. Driven by the willingness to eradicate their stigma on Math, Hugo started making regular visits to orphanages to help the children do their math homework in 2018. Besides, he also conducted online tutoring for an affordable fee and donated the earnings to the orphanages. In May 2020, Hugo decided to develop this effort further into a “Math for Humanity” initiative and invited his friends who shared the same vision to join him in teaching math classes and organizing charity programs. Today, they have supported 50 students and raised USD 7,500 in total, which was donated to orphanages, nursing homes, and education institutions for people with disabilities. Hugo believes that students' achievements are not only measured by grades or the number of Olympiad medals, but also by the contribution they make to society.
Hugo planned to optimize “Math for Humanity’s” programs and website to set an example for his colleagues, to inspire them that they can also utilize their own talents, skills, and knowledge to help others, either by joining his movement or initiating their own. He also hoped that people around him can start viewing achievements, not only based on academic standards, but also through the ability to find a solution, non-academic movements that youths build to help the community.
