For the first time in human history, there are more people over the age of 65 than children under the age of five. And by 2050 the number of people aged over 80 will triple. The statistics show a new reality. At the same time, this longevity revolution is by no means only about older persons. Longer lives don’t just add years to the end of life, but extend and transform all stages of life.

Identifying the opportunities and challenges that this demographic shift and the multi-staged human lifespan represent in our society is key, with profound implications in areas such as urban planning, education, healthcare and prevention of diseases, labor market, mobility, culture, governance...

Powered by Ashoka, the BBK New Longevity Summit is a global gathering to connect avant-garde ideas in the field of longevity. Together, we will learn from social entrepreneurs addressing longevity with systems-changing approaches, connect local and international changemakers, and generate alliances between social entrepreneurs, business/industry leaders, companies and philanthropists.

Why Bilbao?

A melting pot of cultures, Bilbao connects the ancient Basque culture with a mix of modern design, architecture, urban planning and sustainable mobility. The Basque city has become a global benchmark of urban renewal, as a result of the profound transformation it has undergone in recent decades.

Spain is among the countries in the world with the oldest population, and particularly the Basque region, where it's estimated that 3 out of 10 people will be over 65, by 2031.

This is why the Bilbao-based bank foundation BBK and Ashoka have joined forced to address the systemic challenges linked to aging and longevity.
