The burnout epidemic in the media: what Ashoka Fellow Mar Cabra learnt first-hand and how to prevent it
This event is only open to Ashoka Fellows and their staff members.
The mental health of journalists has been steadily deteriorating since the pandemic with record levels of burnout, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Many people feel overwhelmed due to a broken business model and rapid digitalization, which adds to the emotional difficulty of the content we cover.
In this session, Ashoka Fellow Mar Cabra will explore realistic solutions for your media organizations to support your teams with their mental health challenges and improve talent retention. She will build on her own lived experience and her professional background, teaching thousands of journalists with her nonprofit, The Self-Investigation, which promotes mental health and wellbeing in the media.
By participating, you will have the chance to:
- Get new data and context on the current state of mental health of journalists worldwide.
- Learn practical support solutions applicable to media organizations – regardless of budget.
- Explore the challenges the session attendees are facing and promote learning across the group.
