Ashoka is a global association of the world’s leading social entrepreneurs—men and women with systems changing solutions for the world’s most urgent social problems. Since 1981, we have elected and supported over approximately 3,800 outstanding social entrepreneurs as Ashoka Fellows, providing them with living stipends, professional support, and access to a global network of peers in more than 90 countries.

What you will be doing

We are looking for a dynamic volunteer to join our team over the next 3-6 months. The role will involve working on Ashoka’s core programme, Venture - the search and selection of leading social entrepreneurs in the Nordic region to the Ashoka Fellowship. The Venture process involves carrying out careful research into potential Fellows and presenting detailed background information in a persuasive format about the strongest candidates.

What we are looking for

The candidate will be someone who loves to research, solving problems, is persistent and who is curious about other people. While no prior experience is required for this position, understanding of and a desire to learn about the social entrepreneurship field is required.

The role would suit someone who is inquisitive and self-motivated, who enjoys analysing or wants to learn more about social impact and systems change models and is excited to discover true innovation, digging beneath the surface of potential candidates and their work/impact. We value the expertise and knowledge of those who have lived experience and who are working to create the change Ashoka believes in.

Main Activities and Responsibilities

• Carrying out research into leading social entrepreneurs in the Nordic region

• Evaluating candidates using the Fellow Criteria working as a link between our country managers placed out of Sweden and Finland and our Venture Manager based out of the UK

• Presenting research on short-listed candidates in the form of a concise “profile”

• Identifying changemakers, social impact leaders, and social entrepreneurs across multiple sectors to build the nominator network of Ashoka and increase the number of applications

Venture Volunteer Requirements

• Experience with or understanding of the citizen/charity sector, either as a social entrepreneur or as a volunteer, trustee, or activist

• Strong research and analytical skills with a critical eye; experience in planning and carrying out research activities

• Self-motivated and ability to work independently

Who can apply

We believe in flexible and remote working arrangements. The majority of the team is based in Stockholm and Helsinki; however, if it is difficult for you to travel there, we are happy to arrange for you to work remotely. This is a volunteer role for six months (we are happy to discuss flexible working with the right candidate, but candidates must commit to at least 10 hours of work per week).

Interviews will be conducted over Zoom on the 17th of March. Flexible start date between end of March and beginning of April.

Compensation: We are not able to compensate for this role but will of course reimburse any travels or other direct costs related to this work. We can also provide you with a laptop during these months.
