Ashoka Generation Changemaker Weekend: Empowering Youth to Co-Create a better future.
In a world marked by complex crises, constant change, and rapid progress, young people play a crucial role as active shapers of the future. They are raising their voices, developing innovative solutions, and taking action to create a better and more inclusive society.
A weekend of Inspiration and Collaboration
Over the course of three days, 35 young changemakers from Austria, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein came together in Sankt Arbogast and Liechtenstein to exchange ideas, share their inspiring visions, and discuss innovative projects aimed at driving positive change.
Participant Banan Sakbani reflected, “I found myself in an environment that unfolded the best weekend of my life, with people who listened to me and believe both in me and my idea. The story of every young person will remain with me for life, and here's the best part: the connections I made are not just contacts on my phone, but people I can easily approach when I need support or help”. Banan’s testimonial captures the spirit of the weekend; an opportunity for these young people to connect with like-minded peers, learn from each other's experiences, and build a strong and supportive network.
The weekend began with a welcoming and getting-to-know-each-other session, sparking immediate connections and collaborative energy among participants. With a series of sessions, including a kick-off of their Changemaker Journey, they dived deeply into their areas of focus, solutions, and shared stories of their paths to becoming changemakers. Each project, whether focused on sustainability initiatives or mental health advocacy, showcased their commitment and passion for making a difference in their communities and the world.
Insights from the “YEP Generation Changemaker” Youth Report:
The foundation for this gathering was laid through a participatory survey and process conducted by YEP Austria, an organization dedicated to empowering and advocating for youth participation and engagement in society. The survey sought to understand the support young changemakers need, identify the barriers they face, and shed light on their aspirations and requirements. These insights from the youth themselves are key to unlocking their full potential. The findings from this study offer valuable insights and were key to designing the weekend’s agenda to align with the specific needs and aspirations of the participants.
Engaging with Government and Community Leaders
The Generation Changemaker Weekend provided a unique opportunity for the participants to engage with government and community leaders. A meeting with Manuel Frick, Liechtenstein's Minister for Society and Culture, at the TAK Theater Liechtenstein, allowed the participants to discuss their projects and ideas for driving global change. This interaction with a government representative provided validation and encouragement for the young changemakers to continue their journey.
A Royal Reception at Vaduz Castle
A highlight of the weekend was the reception at Vaduz Castle, where the participants were warmly welcomed by Alois, Hereditary Prince of Liechtenstein. In the majestic surroundings of the castle, participants had the opportunity to share the “YEP Generation Changemaker” Youth Report’s findings and delve deep into discussing the role of youth in shaping the future and the challenges they face on their changemaking journey. This royal reception served as a powerful reminder of the significance of their work and the potential for their projects to create positive change on a global scale.
