Elected in 2009 as the firstAshoka Fellow in the Netherlands, Dennis is the founder of Justdiggit, a global social movement for climate action thatjumpstarts landscape restoration programmes.
Justdiggit's vision is to restore entire ecosystems using community-based water harvesting, agro-forestry and climate resilient agriculture.
Besides current large-scale projects in Kenya and Tanzania,Justdiggit will soon start in Uganda, Malawi and Ethiopia.
The organisation has big ambitions for the continent of Africa; The goal is to support the 28 countries within the AFR100 (the African Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative) who pledged to bring 100 million hectares of land in Africa into restoration by 2030.
Dennis Karpes has been acknowledged as an inspirational social entrepreneur and recognised public speaker. He is an alumnus of the Young Global Leaders community from the World Economic Forum, a unique community of more than 700 exceptional young leaders who share a commitment of shaping the global future and helping society. Furthermore, he received the Knight’s Cross in Order of Orange- Nassau for his social work and he was the first elected Ashoka fellow in the Netherlands. Since 2012 he is also a Climate Reality Leader.
Today Dennis is bringing Justdiggit to Belgium, Germany and the UK. His goal is to grow impact with Justdiggit’s positive solution that ‘if we can warm up the earth, we can also cool it down’. In other words, transforming dry land into green land again, focusing on Africa.
