Google is a company that believes deeply in entrepreneurship. And this is a company that believes deeply in the power of information. We don’t think there’s another organization that combines these two things in a more compelling way than Ashoka.

Volker enables both men and women to have freedom of choice when making career and reproductive decisions by redefining male gender roles: by creating a new work culture and promoting modern work patterns, he empowers men to live up to their role as fathers and eliminate their fear that time spent with their family jeopardizes their career. He realized that despite the women's empowerment movement, it is still difficult for couples to break through the family-caretaker/breadwinner dichotomy: even though it is said to be generally accepted that women work, it is not accepted that men take time off and compromise their career for their children. Thus Volker focuses on working with corporations, since men define themselves to a large extent through their work. He successfully changes business culture from the top down, convincing CEOs that fatherhood can help men become better workers, and showing them that more father- and family-friendly policies are key to having motivated and high performing staff. At the same time, Volker also works from the bottom up, creating a demand for those policies among the employees and demonstrating to men that active fatherhood can be an asset to their family and work.
