Fall 2009 Internship Opportunities

News & Knowledge/People Team Internship:

The People Team and the News & Knowledge program are looking for people to work on major projects such as our transition to Salesforce, organization-wide recruiting, and developing content for the News & Knowledge program (check out the website to learn more about this program). Each of these projects requires different but complementary skills. 

Responsibilities may include the following:

  • Help compile and create content for the News & Knowledge newsletters
  • Develop marketing collateral to share our Fellows' work - such as Fellow profiles, creating basic graphics, and developing compelling story telling pieces
  • Interact and interview with our Fellows - including editing these interviews into videos featured on the website
  • Re-create the News & Knowledge website to represent the vision and mission of the program
  • Manage the data migration to Salesforce

Ideal Candidates:

  • Able to learn new databases
  • Good project management skills
  • Good writing ability (especially summarizing)
  • Detail-oriented
  • Familiar with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and In Design
  • Film editing knowledge on Mac
  • Ability to multi-task

This internship is unpaid, and can be taken on part-time or full-time (with the option of working some from home) from September to December.

Executive Office Intern

Description:
Ashoka: Innovators for the Public, a global non profit, seeks a bright intern to join the team responsible for supporting the Senior Staff.

Qualifications:
Candidates will have strong entrepreneurial qualities. Computer skills are required, including knowledge of the Windows Office Suite of products, Outlook Exchange, and the Internet. Strong editing and organizational skills, as well as the ability to work independently and meet deadlines on multiple projects, are essential. Flexibility and skill in working as a team member are a must as the position requires working in a high demand, multiple-task environment with changing priorities. Candidates should be intellectually inquisitive and able to gather, assess and synthesize information from various sources. Experience working in an office environment is a plus.

This office has a relatively small team; judgment, integrity, and the ability to listen with sensitivity to others are traits that are particularly important. Teamwork is essential to effectiveness.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • The Intern will provide administrative support to the Senior staff working within a team.
  • Respond to inquiries from colleagues and the general public.
  • Internet research.
  • Plan and coordinate special events.
  • Organize and arrange appointments, itineraries, conference calls, travel arrangements and expense reports.
  • Manage incoming phone calls with a focus on strong customer service and professional phone etiquette.

Communications Internship

The Communications team is looking for a Fall Associate to help us develop the AshokaTech blog.

Responsibilities would include:

  • Writing articles for the blog on a regular basis
  • Doing outreach to the technology community about the blog, and exploring new ways of promoting it
  • Supporting the communications team with other tasks


The ideal candidate:

  • Strong writing skills; journalism background a plus
  • A demonstrated interest in social entrepreneurship and technology
  • An entrepreneur—self-starter
  • Knowledge of the Drupal CMS a plus, but not required

Ashoka’s Youth Venture Internships

Ashoka’s Youth Venture inspires and invests in teams of young people to create and launch their own sustainable, community-benefiting Ventures while at the same time connecting them to a global movement of young changemakers from all around the world. Ashoka’s Youth Venture is looking for interns to join its dynamic team over the fall and help build our global movement.

Overview: Interact with young people in the US and around the world and compile best practices of Youth Venture’s practices. Create newsletters and share information updates about Youth Venture Fellowship. Facilitate the interaction and activities of Youth Venture Ambassadors online and offline. Help arrange trainings, workshops and/or educational opportunities for youth involved in our program. Assist in managing national competitions for youth.

Qualifications: We are looking for self-starters, highly motivated and creative candidates. Enjoyment in working with and for youth. Ability to speak and interact comfortably to a variety of audiences. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Previous experience in working with youth is a plus. An innovator for the public—demonstrable interest in social issues and working for solutions. Undergraduate student or Bachelor’s graduate. Those studying for or holding an MBA are also encouraged to apply and will receive special consideration in determining roles and responsibilities.

Length of commitment and hours are flexible. Can receive academic credit if applicable.

International Fellow Support Fall Associate (1 opening)

Ashoka’s Venture is the first mechanism through which we find and support the world’s leading social entrepreneurs.  Ashoka’s Global Fellowship helps our Fellows to do more together than they could do individually — providing a global perspective for local innovation.

Responsibilities: The International Fellow Support associate’s responsibilities will include: working directly with international Ashoka Fellows who visit the global office in order to support their visit arrangements, create new opportunities for external engagement and explore creative media to communicate their work; developing case studies on Ashoka Fellows’ work; supporting Ashoka’s global and regional offices.

Qualifications: an effective, personable, internationally-focused, energetic team player.  Ashoka seeks people who are flexible, fast learners and innovative.  Excellent verbal and written communication skills, superior attention to detail and organization are required. Work experience and computer proficiency are required.  Fluency in another language is ideal, though not necessary.

The Global Engagement Team (GET) Internship

The Global Engagement Team (GET) facilitates and coordinates Ashoka's fundraising efforts while building development capability for Ashoka staff and programs. The GET Intern program offers an opportunity to learn fundraising best practices in a globally integrated citizen sector organization.

GET Interns work on prospect research, grant proposals, knowledge management, donor relations and event planning. Due of the cross-cutting nature of GET, interns will have the opportunity to interact and work closely with many of Ashoka's programs and initiatives.

Qualifications: interest in the field of development, strong communication and computer skills, and positive and energetic interpersonal skills.

Ashoka US: Program Associate Position

Ashoka Innovators for the Public is a global, non-profit organization that identifies and invests in social entrepreneurs (Ashoka Fellows) worldwide. Social entrepreneurs are people with innovative yet practical ideas who bring about far-reaching social change in such fields as the environment, education, health, human rights, and income generation.   • Conduct research to identify the names of innovative organizations and individuals who are attacking social problems within particular fields (e.g., economic development), ethnic groups (e.g., American Indians), geographic regions (e.g., Southwest)
  • Conduct research in a diverse range of social fields to enable Ashoka to judge the innovation of candidates’ ideas
  • Help coordinate logistics of application and selection process, including disseminating and tracking of applications, nominators and nominations, reference checking, and coordinating logistics of the selection panels
  • Support the engagement and collaboration of over 120 leaders that are part of the Ashoka-US Fellowship
