Internship Opportunities


Ashoka's intern program is located in our office in Arlington, Virginia (just outside Washington, DC). Intern applicants for our international offices should apply directly to the appropriate country representative.

Ashoka looks for Associates to work in Arlington, Virginia. Most Associates will receive a stipend, commensurate with academic experience, though some positions are unpaid.

Ashoka is an officially recognized work-study employer for eligible students from Georgetown University and George Washington University.

Ashoka-U.S.

The US program at Ashoka has two full time internship positions for undergraduate and masters level students that need to be filled IMMEDIATELY.

The intern responsibilities may include:

-    Planning support for the activation, induction, and orientation of new Fellows.
-    Participation in the search and selection process for Ashoka US Fellows;
o    help coordinating logistics of the selection process, including applicant and nominator tracking;
o    event planning;
o    arranging travel; and
o    conducting research in a diverse range of social fields to assist in the evaluation of the candidates’ ideas and how well they meet criteria such as potential social impact and innovation.
-    Interns may also help with writing and editing the newsletter, website and preparing Awards nominations for Ashoka US Fellows.

We look for strong writing and communications skills; web research skills; data entry and management skills; attention to detail; ability to work well on teams; diplomacy;

Global Development Internship


The Global Development department facilitates and coordinates Ashoka's fundraising and outreach efforts globally while also building development capability for all Ashoka staff. This position offers interns an opportunity to learn the ins and outs of fundraising in a globally integrated citizen sector organization. Interns will work on prospect research, grant proposals, knowledge management, donor relations, and event planning. Because of the cross-cutting nature of the Development department, interns will have the opportunity to interact and work closely with Ashoka's other programs and initiatives.

Qualifications: Ashoka is an ideal place for creative problem-solvers. We look for highly collegial, ethical people who have a track record of entrepreneurship and innovating for the public. Professional skills: familiarity with internet research; facility with Microsoft Excel; strong writing and editing skills; excellent verbal, interpersonal and group communications skills; exceptional organizational and time management skills; knowledge of Raiser's Edge and GetActive/Convio a plus. Above all, ideal applicants will be energetic and solution-oriented with a sense of humor. Prior office experience required. Graduate student preferred.

Venture – Africa Program Internship


Learn about the field of social entrepreneurship and engage in the process of selecting and supporting individuals at the forefront of social innovations in Africa!  The Africa program has one part time opening (20 hours/week).

Responsibilities: Editing and formatting candidate materials for Ashoka Board meetings; preparing reports on regional programs and specific Ashoka Fellows for Ashoka donors and marketing initiatives; researching the state of civil society in prospective Ashoka expansion countries and helping to cultivate contacts and assess the feasibility of launching Ashoka programs in these countries; researching new avenues for funding regional programs and seeking out new potential donors.

Qualifications: excellent writing, computer design, research, and analytical skills.  Please submit an English language writing sample. Knowledge of French and/or Portuguese a plus.

Citizen Base Initiative (CBI) 

Works with social entrepreneurs and other civil society practitioners to spark and support innovative strategies for mobilizing local resources--people, partnerships, services, income, and goods--in order to build stronger and sustainable civil society organizations


CBI Best Practices Internship

Responsibilities: Interact with civil society organizations (CSOs) and social entrepreneurs around the world while compiling best practices case studies for regional and global publication. Interns will be responsible for helping a professional writer research, edit, fact-check, and categorize case studies. Collaborate with the CBI team to prepare the case studies for online and print publication with a major publishing house, including the development of a global marketing plan.

Qualifications: Qualified candidates will demonstrate specific interest and knowledge of sustainability issues among CSOs in developing countries and have proven excellent writing and editing skills..  Please submit a writing sample that best demonstrates your creative and able writing capacity. Journalist experience and/or work with website management preferred.

Global Fellowship Internship

Ashoka’s Global Fellowship Team is strengthening the community of Ashoka Fellows by connecting, supporting and engaging Ashoka’s nearly 2,000 leading social entrepreneurs worldwide.  We are looking to fill a full time intern position to support global fellowship program.

Global Fellowship Support (ideally undergrad degree,or graduate degree, full time)

Responsibilities: The Global Fellowship Fall associate’s responsibilities will be to support, capture and disseminate Fellowship best practices from the country programs; assist in the launch of bi-monthly fellowship newsletter featuring best practices and recipes; conduct research for potential funding opportunities and assist in proposal writing; support the creation of an efficient budgeting system to track Fellowship implementation and expenditures in the country offices.

Qualifications:  Excellent writing, research, and analytical skills.  Please submit a  writing sample in English. We require an effective, detail-oriented, international-focused, energetic team player.  Ashoka seeks people who are innovative thinkers, flexible, and fast learners.  Prior work experience, excellent communication skills, excellent writing skills and computer proficiency are required.  Fluency in another language is ideal, though not necessary.
