Wellington Nogueira

Health
Elected an Ashoka Fellow in Brazil, 1997


Ashoka Fellow Innovation: After working 9 years as an actor in New York, Wellington created the organization "Doctors of Joy" in Brazil to help children overcome trauma while hospitalized and to create a positive and funny image to doctors and hospital staff in order to improve medical treatment. The teams of "Clown Doctors" visit each children's hospital twice a week and receive rigorous training in-hospital procedures and medical services aspart of the "Clown Care Unit".

Impact: "Doctors of Joy" today has spread to 10 hospital in several states of Brazil and has served over 50,000 children to date. Partners include Roche Laboratories, Volkswagen and Itau Insurance.

Value provided by the CSE program: Wellington participated in the Entrepreneur to Entrepreneur (E2) program, as an individual business entrepreneur provided his stipend through Ashoka and they exchanged information and knowledge.

Trainings: Wellington participated in presentation trainings by McKinsey and Company, Citizen Base Initiative: Wellington won the award from the Citizen Base Initiative competition in innovative fundraising strategies and this provided him further training in fundraising and management through volunteerism.

Consultancy: In 2000, Wellington worked with a team of McKinsey consultants pro-bono on strategic management and organizational development to replicate his model.

 

Jane Sieh
Health
Elected an Ashoka Fellow in Brazil, 1989

Ashoka Fellow Innovation: The Primavera Group works with girls, age 11-18, in Campinas, Sao Paulo. Through educational and professional training courses, Primavera helps prepare these girls to become productive members of society as women, mothers, citizens, and professionals.

Value provided by the CSE program:
Stipend/E2 program: From 1989 to 1991 Jane received a monthly stipend investment from Ashoka.

Trainings: In 1997 and 1998 Jane, together with members of her staff, participated in the CSE presentation skills and resource mobilization trainings, including a 6 month progress review.

Consultancy: In 1999 The Primavera Group was one of the winners of the first Business Plan Competition for Social Entrepreneurs. The business plan was developed to launch a line of artisan dolls, which are currently in production.

Other: Fundraising support through information exchange and networking.

 

Vera Cordeiro
Health
Elected an Ashoka Fellow in Brazil in 1992


Ashoka Fellow Innovation: Renascer was founded in Rio de Janeiro in 1991 by Ashoka Fellow Vera Cordeiro, a medical doctor. The mission of her organization is to promote a higher quality of of life for very poor families with children who are at risk of repeat hospitalization. Her work started at Rio's public Lagoa Hospital.

Value provided by the CSE program: Stipend/E2 program: From 1992 to 1995 Vera received a monthly stipend from a business entrepreneur in healthcare to cover personal expenses which allowed her to dedicate full time to the development of Renascer.

Trainings: In 1996 Vera participated in the CSE presentation skills and resource mobilization trainings, including a 6 month progress review.

Consultancy: Since 1998, a group of McKinsey volunteer consultants have been working with Renascer to create a sustainable replication strategy of the Renascer model. Renascer has now expanded to 11 other hospitals in Rio de Janeiro and to 5 other Brazilian states, serving 6,500 children and 1,200 families.

Other: Vera has received support in her fundraising efforts with an internal fundraising campaign at McKinsey and through information and contacts provided by Ashoka.
 

 
Rodrigo Baggio
Learning
Elected an Ashoka Fellow in Brazil, 1996


Ashoka Fellow Innovation: Rodrigo Baggio, founder and executive director of CDI, is working to bring computer access and training and citizenship skills to "favela" (slum) communities in Brazil.

Value provided by the CSE program:
Stipend/E2 program:: From 1996 to 1999 Rodrigo received a monthly stipend from Ashoka with an investment from E2 member Swiss Re.

Trainings: In 1998 Rodrigo participated in the CSE presentation skills and resource mobilization trainings, including a 6 month progress review.

Consultancy: In 1999 a group of volunteer McKinsey consultants worked with CDI to develop a growth strategy, emphasizing quality control mechanisms for the computer and education courses provided by CDI. CDI has trained approximately 75,000 students in more than 200 communities throughout Brazil. The model is spreading to Japan, the U.S. and Colombia.

Other: Rodrigo received fundraising support through introductions and networking opportunities.
